Judges look to single forum for family law cases

Judges in Alberta are contemplating a single forum for family law cases. Presently matters relating to divorce and the division of matrimonial property are covered by the Divorce Act and are heard in the Court of Queen’s Bench. Other family law matters outside divorce are covered by the Family Law Act and are heard in the Provincial court.
It is of no doubt a unified court would improve access to justice, however there are opinions that advocates working to improve the family courts must first identify the problems before they can know a unified system is a solution.
